Monument to the Fallen

Como,

Viale Giancarlo Puecher

The Como War Memorial is an imposing tower, rising 30 metres in height, and ws built in the early 1930s. In 1930 the City of Como and the city administrator, the “podestà”, launched a competition to build a monument in memory of the 650 soldiers of Como who fell in the first World War.

On his way to Como to visit the Antonio Sant’Elia exhibition at the city’s Broletto, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, founder of the Futurist movement, suggested that the building of the monument should draw its inspiration closely from a drawing by Sant’Elia called “Torre Faro.” The monument was inaugurated on November 4th 1933, and was built with the involvement of such illustrious figures as Giuseppe Terragni.
