Commitment

Inclusive and Shared Design

The Como UNESCO Creative City project is based on a participatory approach, actively involving all the actors of the local area. The “Area Governance of Como UNESCO Creative City” Consultation Table was set up to ensure well-structured and shared governance, coordinated by the Municipality of Como, as its leading body, and by the Chamber of Commerce of Como-Lecco, with the participation of the Province of Como.

The Table brings together public bodies, cultural institutions, businesses, associations and private entities, with the aim of fostering synergic and inclusive collaboration. The City Council and the Chamber of Commerce act as guarantors and facilitators, ensuring that the process develops in line with the UNESCO Guidelines for Creative Cities. There is also a Creative Committee, a multidisciplinary group of experts in the relevant strategic sectors, that has been active since 2022, as an open and spontaneous working group of professionals and experts who contribute voluntarily, without formal establishment.

The Como UNESCO Creative City project is based on two key principles:

• Participation and co-planning
UNESCO recognition is not only given to the municipal council or institutions, but to the entire creative ecosystem of the city. Planning is based on an inclusive model that places full value on the contributions of all involved.

• A dynamic local creative ecosystem
Designation as a UNESCO Creative City not only rewards administrative excellence but also recognises the overall value of the local creative chain. The project lives and evolves through the active participation of cultural institutions, enterprises, craftsmen, designers, artists and citizens, all of whom play leading roles in reinforcing and innovating Como’s creative identity.
