The Community Project
Como UNESCO Creative City is a participative and generative project that belongs to the all the people of the area. From this perspective it must be considered community, it is a shared commitment that brings together the energies of institutions, enterprises, artisans and citizens to focus on creativity and culture as drivers of development. Since 2021, Como has been part of the global network of UNESCO Creative Cities, an international network promoting creativity as an instrument for sustainable growth.
Como is the home of Italy’s Textile Valley, an area devoted to the Culture of Making, where textiles and the art of silk are the beating heart of local identity. These areas are intertwined with other strategic sectors such as design, wood-furnishing, architecture and marble processing, creating an interconnected and creative ecosystem that is continuously transforming itself. Being a UNESCO Creative City means establishing an open system in the community that is able to build synergies with the other cities in the network, stimulating new skills and offering opportunities for future generations. The Como UNESCO Creative City project is constantly evolving, since creativity is a process, the very thread that joins past, present and future, fuelling change and defining an innovative and sustainable vision for the whole area.
“By joining the Network, Como has committed itself to firmly placing culture and creativity at the heart of its own sustainable development. Como’s efforts to integrate culture and creativity into its post-pandemic recovery plan are particularly inspiring.”
Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO
